Blackheath Apartment

A moody urban vision, pulled together.

The brief

This client arrived with a clear picture in his head: dark, moody and urban. He knew the feeling he wanted, and what he needed was help pulling it all together.

The design

The apartment already held the makings of the look he was after. What it lacked was cohesion: rooms that read separately, surfaces that pulled against each other, and too few moments worth pausing on. Our work was to find the thread that ran through it all, and to do that without stripping the place back to nothing.

The kitchen stayed. We upcycled what was there and rebuilt the character around it, so the flooring, splashbacks, cabinet finish, hardware and shelving all pulled in the same direction. That thinking carried through the lounge and dining area until the three spaces read as one.

Interest came from a few considered moves rather than starting again: a fitted media unit shaped around the way he lives, wooden barn-style doors that give each threshold a moment of its own, and a reworked bathroom layout. The old office earned its keep too, reconfigured into a room designed around his drum kit.

Lighting is what finally drew it together, layered and deliberately low, giving the apartment its atmosphere once the sun goes down. From there I guided him through sourcing the remaining pieces, and we styled the finished rooms together through consultation.

Every detail, considered

Keeping the kitchen meant the budget went where it shows. New flooring, splashbacks, cabinet finishes, hardware and shelving together read as a different room altogether, without a single unit being ripped out. The media unit was drawn around the way he actually uses the space, timber barn doors warm a dark palette, and every material was chosen against the others so that nothing sits out of key.
