Cassiobury Family Home, Watford

A family home, reshaped around the way they live.

The brief

The family loved their home. It had simply stopped working the way they live. The house was ready for a refurbishment, and the hallway, unusually generous for a house of this size, was space doing nothing at all. Older relatives come to stay for a couple of months each year with nowhere on the ground floor to put them, and upstairs the family bathroom had always felt tight.

The design

We explored a couple of layouts with the family before settling on the one that felt right. Moving the kitchen to the back of the house was the move that set everything else free. Part of the old kitchen, a slice of that oversized hallway and the original WC came together as a guest bedroom and a ground floor shower room, both opening off the hall, so visiting relatives now have a room of their own.

What was left of the old kitchen and the former living room became a kitchen diner running the full width of the back of the house, open to a large, welcoming lounge. The heart of the home moved, and the house feels twice as generous for it.

Upstairs asked for less. Drawing a hall cupboard into the family bathroom found the room for both a bath and a separate shower, where the space had once felt tight. The other rooms already worked well for the family, so their layouts stayed much as they were, apart from reworking the storage. From there it was all in the finishing layers: new flooring, coving and skirting, fresh surface finishes, window treatments, and furniture that mixes new pieces with their own, upcycled to belong in the new scheme.

Every detail, considered

The pieces the family lives with mattered as much as the plan. We designed the kitchen and the wardrobes, planned the lighting and sourced every finishing material. They wanted to keep their original beds in a couple of the rooms, so we upcycled them to sit naturally within the new look, and sourced the rest of the furniture, decorative lighting, fixtures, fittings and accessories throughout the house. On site, we worked alongside the family to coordinate the trades, so that every detail stayed true to the design.

The result

Visiting family now have a comfortable room of their own. The kitchen diner has become the heart of the house, where friends and family gather, and the lounge is where film Fridays happen.
