The Felden Annex
A double garage, turned into a home of his own.
The brief
Alongside the Felden Family Home, and for the same merged family, the eldest son needed a place of his own. The double garage gave us the footprint and little else: an empty brick and cement shell, with nothing about it that said home. He needed a desk and working area, a kitchen, a generous en-suite and room for a large king-sized bed, and the result had to read as a home rather than a converted garage, with an urban undertone in place of the timeless classic style of the main house.
The design
The building was refurbished completely, and the garage doors gave way to wooden windows repurposed from the main house, so the annex belongs to the property rather than looking like something added on.
Inside, the first decision did the most work. A porch now leads into the main living space, giving the annex a proper entrance, holding ample storage for outdoor clothing and freeing the wall where the desk sits. That single move is what turns one open room into a home.
Storage mattered as much as the layout. He is style conscious and exceptionally tidy, so everything needed a place to live, something we always encourage our clients to consider: fitted wardrobes with ample hanging space, drawers, and open shelving lit from within, where books and favourite pieces become part of the room rather than clutter in it.
Every inch had to earn its keep. The kitchen is compact and hard-working, with bar seating at a peninsula that also houses cupboards and the fridge, and beyond it sit a comfortable sleeping area and a large shower room. Dark timber, textured walls and layered lighting give the annex its urban character.
Every detail, considered
In a space this size, nothing can be left to chance. Windows repurposed from the main house tie the annex to the property rather than marking it out as an addition. The porch takes everything that comes in from outside, and the joinery was drawn around him: proper hanging space, drawers, and shelving lit from within so the pieces he loves are on show rather than in the way. The peninsula works three ways at once, as bar seating, as cupboards and as the home of the fridge. Dark timber, textured walls and layered lighting carry the annex from workspace by day to somewhere to unwind at night.
The result
The eldest son has a home of his own a few steps from the family, and the other boys are already fighting over who gets it next.
