The Hair Movement Salon
A working salon, designed around the way it trades.
The brief
This project came from a home. We had worked with the client on their own house, and when they came to fit out their salon in Sidcup, Kent, they asked us to take it on. It was a different kind of commission for us, and all the more interesting for it: a salon is a business before it is an interior. Every square metre has to earn its keep, the team has to work without getting in each other’s way, and clients have to feel looked after from the moment they walk in. The space had to hold the salon floor, a back office, storage and a customer WC, and all of it had to look like the brand.
The design
We configured the internal space from scratch: the front of the salon, the back office, the storage and the WC, then set out the whole floor around how the salon actually trades, from arriving and waiting through to colour, cutting and backwash.
Materials came next. Concrete, timber, white and a sharp yellow give the salon an industrial edge that suits the brand and stands up to daily use, with patterned tiling and planting to soften it.
The lighting was designed in detail, because in a salon it is technical as well as atmospheric: colour has to be judged accurately at the station, the retail display has to draw the eye, and the room still has to feel warm at the end of a long day.
We then handled procurement and coordinated the project on site, so that what was built matched the design intent.
Every detail, considered
Retail was designed into the room rather than added to it, with lit shelving that makes the products look worth buying. The moss wall and planting bring life into a hard-wearing scheme. Graphics and signage were placed where clients actually look, in the window, at the desk and along the colour bar. And the customer WC was given the same care as the salon floor, because it is one of the places people quietly judge a business.
The result
A salon that works as hard as the team in it, and looks like the brand it belongs to. The design went on to win a salon design award from Hairdressers Journal.
